What Knowing Basic Woodworking Terms Is Essential
To get started in woodworking there are a few important steps you should take, one being to learn at least the basic woodworking terms. Doing so will make it easier to understand plans and blueprints, and help you communicate with others when doing woodworking projects. By learning at least the most basic woodworking terms to start, you’ll be able to follow easy woodworking projects properly and have less chance of injuring yourself. There are over one hundred terms that are recognized in woodworking, but a few in particular that are commonly used and most important to learn.
The term linear foot is one often used in do it yourself woodworking projects, and refers to the measurement of a board. A miter guage is an accessory used with a stationary sander, router table, and a band saw. This helps stabilize the wood while also cutting it at an angle. It will also tell you what angle the wood needs to be cut at.
When you’re learning the basic woodworking terms, you’ll want to learn about the term check. It is a split in the wood lengthwise that happened during the drying process. A collet is the bit holding device that is used on routers as well as CNC milling machines. Joiners are also talked about often in woodworking, and are handheld planes which are used to straighten up the edges of a board.
Milling involves feeding a workpiece into a tooth cutter to cut away the material. A kickback describes an occurrence when a board is rejected by the machine and sent back to the operator.. Kickbacks can be extremely dangerous in woodworking, especially if the wood you’re using is thick and heavy and comes flying back at you at full force. A kickback occurs when a board being cut on a machine gets thrown back off the machine, towards the operator. Regardless of the cause of the kickback, if you’re not wearing appropriate safety gear or get hit in the wrong spot, you could get seriously injured.
These are just some examples of the most basic woodworking terms you should learn before getting started on any projects. However, you’re going to get frustrated and have a much greater risk of getting hurt if you don’t understand the different terms used in woodworking. Woodworking is a great way to express your creativity and have fun doing it. From Halloween lawn figurines to jewelry boxes, the options of what you can make with your woodworking are endless.
